FAMILY HISTORY: His maternal grandmother, Athellie, was a servant in the house of a very important Thalmor diplomat/official in Valenwood. His father was said diplomat/official, who hired an Altmer maid to work with him because he didn't think he could trust the native Bosmer, and subsequently fathered her child, Athanas' mother Ornenya. By the time it was time for the Thalmor official to leave Valenwood, their relationship had (predictably) gone very sour and tiny Ornenya was at home in the Valenwood, so Athellie decided to stay and live there, working in inns and shops until she was able to buy her own farm. As a result, Ornenya grew up among the Bosmer, the people of the wood, with her only contact with her people being expatriates, her mother's stories, and itinerant Altmer/Thalmor, which resulted in her choosing fletching as her trade. She eventually married one of the Altmer who traveled through Valenwood, an itinerent Alinor native named Sulenril on his journeyman years as an enchanter. After they married, they chose to return to Alinor once Sulenril was a master enchanter, to settle down and have a family.

The impacts this had on Athanas: His mother's skillset picked up amongst the Bosmer was taught to/imitated by him, resulting in his great skill at archery and stealth than a typical Altmer. It also gave him great anxiety, living in Dominion Alinor watching his prospective siblings die and being educated enough to know about racial phylogeny; what if his grandfather wasn't Altmer, but Bosmer? What if he wasn't a true master-race elf, but a hybrid? Under the Dominion (and he was far too young to have known anything else) that was a very, very big deal. Thus he began calling himself Athanas Itheron--his parents had, like most non-noble Altmer, no surnames, however his alleged maternal grandfather had the surname of Itheron. He also developed a mostly-subconscious aversion to Bosmer, like he's afraid they can somehow taint him.
